Dialogue Between the Masters of Art in 11th-Century Málaga

Oil on canvas

A dialogue between a personal reinterpretation of a work by Mariano Fortuny, showing a ruin from the past with Muslim Málaga in the background, the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro, and, in the foreground, the other speaker: the Fallen Angel by Ricardo Bellver. Two artists who, though not from Málaga, have been a powerful source of inspiration for Málaga’s arts. Standing before the ruins left by time, the fallen angel also works as a metaphor for the fall and fragility of all things human: even the grandest things end up as ruins, and only art keeps the dialogue between eras alive.

Melilla, a Language Between Cultures

Oil on canvas · First prize, painting contest of the Casa de Melilla in Málaga

First-prize winner at the painting contest of the Casa de Melilla in Málaga. A metaphorical dialogue between the elements that represent the autonomous city: the amphora, for its Phoenician origins, as with Málaga; the three cultures, represented by doves embracing harmoniously; and the central postcard, with the seaward view one has when approaching Melilla by sea. All of it set on a low wall with arabesque tiles, Nasrid art, for its deep roots in Islamic culture, with the heraldic coat of arms on the cloth, and surrounded by a garland of flowers representing beauty and the ephemeral passage of human life. Also painted within the Málaga school of painting.

Digital illustration · Texture study in Procreate

A texture study made in Procreate. More than a drawing, it is an investigation: testing brushes and playing with grain, stroke and transparency to understand how each surface behaves. Just as with paper, the process is one of trial and discard, brush after brush, until the tool says what the hand is looking for.
